Why Study Special Education at Mary Baldwin?

Special education K-12 teachers are in high demand. A special education degree from MBU opens up new career opportunities equipping you with an in-demand skill set and the required licensure endorsement. 

Students majoring in other subjects that want to study Special Education should consider the Special Education minor. This path does not lead to teaching licensure at MBU.

By the end of our program, you’ll be fully prepared to complete the required assessments for licensure and embark on your new career.

Students in this program don’t need to be Virginia residents to seek licensure—they can complete practicums in any accredited school. However, all activities, competencies, and Standards of Learning that are addressed in each experience must apply to Commonwealth of Virginia guidelines.

Teacher Education Program

Students declaring this major must apply to MBU’s Teacher Education Program (TEP) if they are seeking licensure. Upon completion of their degree program and TEP requirements, students will be prepared to obtain a teaching license by Commonwealth of Virginia standards.

MBU provides those who have a passion for teaching students with exceptional needs the atmosphere to confidently develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to successfully transition into the classroom environment.

Learn to Take the Lead

Our special education bachelor’s program empowers future educators to take leadership roles in their schools. We combine theory and practice for an integrated approach to educating exceptional students. At MBU, you will learn to teach, lead, and collaborate with confidence.

Special Education Add-On

Students who want to study Special Education and Elementary Education can earn a Special Education General Curriculum add-on (grades K-6) with an Elementary Education K-6 license by completing additional coursework. The add-on can be earned simultaneously with Elementary Education initial licensure. Speak to an advisor if interested.
